Axe Sharpening Jig

The axe sharpening jig below uses a vertically mounted drill press vice to hold both the hafted axe head and the sharpening jig in place. The sharpening jig is made of parts from a Hapstone type knife sharpening jig. It uses 6″ x 1″ Jende diamond plates in grits of 80, 120, 300, 600 & 1200 to create the polished primary and secondary (micro) bevels.

The sharpened axe head below, a 4 & 1/2lb Hytest Forester Z, has had a deep chisel grind (not quite a banana grind) and micro bevel completed using the above jig. It has then been polished using a 6″ hard felt wheel fitted to a bench grinder.
